Neil Gaiman is called "The Father Of Dreams." He writes about the things that we dream about, the underground, lost places in the world and in our minds. He writes children's stories, fantasy, myth, legend, science fiction, gothic horror, and graphic novels. Gaiman draws from the rich cultures of the world, from the deep recesses of our minds, from our fears and joys, and finds his inspiration in things that have been forgotten. With his words, he breathes life and remembrance into the dark corners of things, and illuminates them. He has written 37 books, 34 graphic novels, and a few anthologies of short stories.
Some of the works that Gaiman has written include:
Gaiman often narrates his own audiobook versions of his stories, or parts of them, as his voice is incredibly versatile and wonderful to listen to. He really makes his characters come alive, animating them with his colorful voice. A book that stands out in this review of American Gods is Gaiman's 2005 novel Anansi Boys. This book features one of the characters from American Gods, Mr. Anansi. Anansi is a West African/Caribbean trixster God. Anansi Boys is about Anansi's son Fat Charlie and his brother, who is really just the dark side of himself. Another work by Neil Gaiman that features characters found in mythology are his Sandman Comics. The Sandman comics feature a character named Morpheus (The Roman God of dreams) also known as Dream. Morpheus takes may names: he is both the personification of dreams and the ruler of the dream realm. Another name that the Sandman character uses in these comics is Oneiroi, who is the Greek God of dreams. In the comic, Dream is referred to as "An Endless," A being older than time who personifies an aspect of existence as old as humanity. Many of Gaiman's novels and short stories have a strong undertone of myth, whether they are myth-like stories he has created or new twists on already existing ancient myths and legends. Gaiman is not just a writer. He is a humanist and political activist. He has been in Syria with Amnesty International trying to help Syrian refugees in a refugee camp.
